Review: Ryde Change Robe

It feels like winter has suddenly switched on here in the UK. If you’re not in your hooded winter suit yet, then you’re tough as nails. This morning’s surf was one of the most bitter - the kind where it stings your eyes and you regret not wearing gloves. I had to warm my hands up before trying to get my boots off because they were numb…

Getting out of the water after a mid-winter session is possibly the hardest thing about surfing or swimming in a cold climate. And, if where you surf is anywhere like where we are in Wales, you’ll no doubt be changing in a car park or lay-by, in the wind and rain.

The last thing you need (or want) is anyone seeing your body while you’re struggling to pull on the skinny jeans you regret wearing. And that’s without considering the serious impact of big temperature changes and not warming up properly post-surf.

Did you know that when you exit the water, your body temperature continues to drop? This is known as “the afterdrop” - watch this video from Sophie Hellyer x Stanley on this.

This is why we’re adding a change robe to our winter essentials list. A good change robe can seriously save you after a bitter surf or swim, helping you warm up faster and protect you from the elements.

Say goodbye to nip slips and goosebumps once and for all…

What to get?

There are a lot of different options when considering a changing robe, from towelling robes to waterproof ones. This is all down to preference and depends on the kind of weather you’re likely to be out in. But we can guarantee that ditching the towel and getting yourself a changing robe is one of the best things you’ll do this winter. You’ll warm up much quicker and will no longer be deterred by the chill.

We’ve picked one of the best robes on the market to review; the Ryde change robe (£125) and poncho (£125). They’re quite similar in ways, so if you’re looking for one, keep reading because we’ll break them down them for you…

Registered on their website under “coats and jackets”, these aren’t your typical changing robes. They are multipurpose and look just like jackets, meaning nobody is going to judge you if you’re wearing them out and about, or walking the dog. This is one of our favourite things about them and the reason why we’re big fans.

Who are Ryde?

We’re a down to earth team, making real products for real people.
— Ryde

They describe themselves as a “down to earth team, making real products for real people.” Having spoken to Larnia - the wonderful face behind the brand - I can vouch for this.

Ryde run their brand with empathy. A love for the outdoors and community is at its core, and they are passionate about the environment. This shines through in their products which they aim to be either organic, recycled or sustainable.

They are also members of 1% for the Planet. Members donate 1% of their annual sales to environmental non profits. This means that every time you shop with Ryde you are automatically supporting people that are working tirelessly to create a healthier planet.

Look

If you’ve already read our first review in this winter series, you’ll know we’re big fans of the sleek, all-black look with minimal branding.

Unlike other changing robes on the market, which tend to opt for jazzy neon colours, Ryde have kept it classy. Both the inside and outside of their robes are black, with minimal branding. This gives them a high end, unisex look.

This smarter design also makes them look less like change robes and more like jackets. Both the poncho and the jacket-style change robe could be worn whilst walking the dog in the rain, around the fire on a camping trip or, if you’re anything like me, for post surf naps. And nobody would think you were wearing anything other than a coat.

Practicality

With their waterproof outside layer, these robes are perfect for our Welsh weather, keeping your body dry as you battle the elements. The insides are lined with a cosy fleece. This is an absorbent fleece, although could use a quick wash like any other towel if you’re planning on slipping into it wet. Both have long sleeves and are oversized with wide shapes to allow you to change in them.

They also have fleece lined drawstring hoods, which not only keep you dry, but help warm your head. Heat is also the reason behind the fold over cuffs. You might question these at first, but this design actually helps keep you warmer.

Both jackets have a handy additional safety feature that you’re not likely to see on other changing robes; they’re reflective. This is a lifesaving add-on we didn’t even know we needed. So whether you’re wearing it camping, or on a dawny or late night session, you know you’ll be seen.

Differences

Without pointing out the obvious… one is a poncho style pull over and the other is a zip up style jacket with popper buttons.

The poncho may feel easier and more snug for some to get changed in due to the ease of popping your arms inside, but this could also feel restrictive for some who would prefer the jacket option for unzipping.

Another key difference is storage. The poncho has a neat kangaroo style pouch pocket with a zip. It’s a little too high to put your hands in, but there are extra pockets each side for you to warm your hands up (although these are not fleece lined). The kangaroo pocket is super handy for keeping your phone, keys etc, while you change, but this feature does make it look less jacket-like and more like your classic change robe.

The jacket also has these side pockets, as well as a few additional “secret” pockets; one on the chest, one on the arm and another inside. These extra features gives it a more technical edge, which is reflected in the price. Just as the name suggests, the changing jacket does look more like a jacket, making it more multi-use.

Price

Both the poncho and the jacket come in at £125. When comparing to other brands on the market, they are significantly cheaper than other similar, waterproof change robes.

The long sleeve DryRobe equivalent will set you back £160, the Finisterre Adelie Robe will cost you £140 and the Northcore Beach Basha will cost you £129.99.

Summary

Ryde’s changing robes are great, more affordable alternatives if you’re looking to upgrade your post-surf winter changing experience. Their multi-use abilities make them more than just suitable for changing in and their smart look makes them classier than other options on the market right now.

If you’re looking for a classic change robe, look no further than the poncho. If slipping your arms in to change is something you’d prefer, we’d recommend this option.

However, if you’d prefer the option to unzip while you change or you’re looking for a more technical all-rounder, opt for the jacket. Of the two, this is definitely the most versatile as you can use it to both get changed or as an everyday coat. The extra pockets make it super handy if you plan to use it for anything from your usual day to day walk with the dog or a big expedition.
